As the fall season of sports simmers down and draws to a close, the spring season of sports is beginning to rev up, lacrosse being one of them.
Even though the lacrosse season does not start until February, preparation and conditioning for the players begins much sooner.
“To prepare for the season I go to the gym and condition on my own,” senior girls’ varsity captain Samantha Byrne said. “Weightlifting and running are my favorite.”
Samantha notices that many of the members on her team have been practicing and working hard in their time off to become better and stronger players.
“Our players are definitely more experienced this season. I can tell they’ve been practicing over the summer,” Samantha said. “The program is still fairly new, but Coach is determined to make us all better players.”
While the girls’ team welcomes a group of rather experienced players, the boys’ lacrosse team has many underclassmen joining. They have to work hard as a team to help build the new players’ skills.
“This season will be a lot different from last season because we have a lot more underclassmen coming up to varsity,” junior boys’ varsity captain Kevin Gagnon said. “We will need to focus a lot more on skills than we did last year.”
Despite this challenge, the team remains optimistic for their success in this upcoming season and even thinks the new players will help boost the team’s skill level.
“We lost a lot of seniors, but we have many eager underclassmen who want to get better,” junior boys’ varsity captain Andrew Herbst said. “I think the underclassmen will help us push the program to success.”
Both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams are preparing for the upcoming season. According to senior girls’ varsity captain Savannah Dale, they are ready to achieve their goal to get to playoffs.
“This season I know we will be more confident at games,” Savannah said. “We will have a closer team than we did last year, so hopefully that can help us make it to playoffs this year.”
The lacrosse players have a passion for their sport and enjoy the opportunities it brings them regardless of the outcome of the season.
“I love being the captain of the team because I can see the immediate impact I have on the players,” Samantha said. “It’s humbling to have people look up to me.”
Lacrosse players love playing this sport and even wish the season went on longer.
“My favorite thing about being on the team is being able to play lacrosse. It’s something that I love to do and being able to go out everyday and play is amazing,” Kevin said. “My least favorite thing, though, is that we don’t play a lot of games. I really wish that our season could extend longer than just two months.”
Lacrosse provides a different experience compared to other sports, and its players love being a part of it and all its history.
“Lacrosse in itself is just different. It’s like a combination of soccer and basketball but with sticks,” Samantha said. “I’ve never really played any other sports, but lacrosse has a lot of history behind it. It’s really fun to watch and play.”
