The newest episode of Star Wars hit the theatres on Dec. 15, 2017. Being a lifelong fan of Star Wars, I had to see it.

Fans across the world anxiously awaited the new episode, as the film’s release was originally planned to be in May. However, in January 2016, Lucasfilm delayed the release to December of last year. The trailer, airing on Oct. 9 2017, only proved that it would be hard to find a dull moment in the new movie.

The Last Jedi quickly became the world’s ninth highest grossing film of all time, raking in over 1.2 billion dollars over a 200 million dollar budget. It earned a solid 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85% on Metacritic, and it’s obvious why.

Rian Johnson’s film utilizes new and classic elements, such as the iconic starter crawl. Snoke, whom we finally meet in person, introduces the Force Bond between main characters Kylo Ren and Rey. This provides for some awesome character development moments, as well as several funny ones.

Throughout the entire film, the audience is cracking up at naturally witty moments, aweing at new adorable creatures called Porgs, and feeling somewhat melancholy at the sight of the late Carrie Fisher. Nevertheless, there’s rarely ever a dull moment.

The story of The Last Jedi can make it seem like a twister of ideas, but the fast pace alleviates some of that confusion fairly quickly. We get three or four different sides to the story. Rey (Daisy Ridley), who is on the island pestering Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill); Poe (Oscar Isaac), who is also bothering the temporary power-holder in the place of Leia (Carrie Fisher); Finn (John Boyega), who is attempting to get into Snoke’s ship unseen with his new comrade (Kelly Marie Tran); and occasionally Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), which shows us the relationship between he and Snoke.

About halfway through the movie, there’s about 10 seconds of pure silence included for a creative effect. Rian Johnson was able to use this to brilliantly emphasize a cataclysmic event.  Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) turned an empty resistance ship and jumped to lightspeed, tearing through Snoke’s ship. A bone-chilling moment worth the price of admission.

All in all, the several delays made to the release of this movie were worth it. Johnson made massive improvements in the story from Episode 7, and Star Wars fans are anxious to see what Episode 9 will bring.
