Teenagers use social media for everything, whether it’s capturing moments, hanging out with friends, or capturing a traumatic event, such as the shooting in Florida last week. But how can spreading awareness on social media help keep others safe?

“Students can help keep schools safe by informing a teacher or administrator if they hear anything that could be related to gun violence,” sophomore Aubrey Addy said.

When posting on social media there are tons of people who will see it. Social media is a way to spread what you want others to know.

“The good thing about social media is it is available to everyone, that all people have the able to use social media to use bring about change and reach out to people beyond people they know and their communities,” Digital integration specialist Susan Aplin said.

Posting responsibly on social media to reach people and have a positive effect on the people who view what you have to say. Once you post something it’s out there and you can’t take it back.

“Students should make sure that any information they share is accurate and non inflabintary. Consider the source you found before sharing it with others,” Aplin said.

Using social media can alert students to be more aware and cautious of their surroundings. According to Aubrey, bring awareness through social media can help others because it can help to alert them to be more aware and cautious.

Social media gets to people everywhere and can really help to make students realize and learn from what is going on in other places. Making students more aware of current events going on.

“Well social media is connected with the school’s worldwide with people sharing personal experiences and it will hopefully sway people to not want it to happen,” senior Ukasha Elmore said.

Students who post about shooting on social media also need to realize that posting could lead to consequences. There is copycatting, where people copy what other people have done.

“Spreading awareness through social media about gun violence and school shootings can have a negative effect on others by causing them to be fearful to come to school and negatively affect their education,” Aubrey said.

Students using social media could have positive outcomes. It can help to spread news around to students worldwide in order to know what is going on.
